10 Questions You Should Be Asking Your Photographer Before Your Shoot

Choosing the right photographer is a big decision, whether it’s for a business event, headshots, or a special occasion like a wedding. Asking the right questions can help you ensure that you’re hiring someone who not only has the experience and skills you need but also understands your vision.

Here are 10 important questions you should ask your photographer before your next shoot to make sure everything goes smoothly:

1. What is Your Experience in the type of photography I’m looking for?

Photographers often specialize in different types of photography, so it’s important to ask whether they have experience in the kind of shoot you’re planning. Whether it’s corporate photography, weddings, or product shots, you want to make sure they know the ins and outs of your particular needs.

2. Can I See a Full Gallery from a Similar Shoot?

Trust me, it’s okay to ask. Looking at a photographer’s portfolio is a great start, but it’s just as important to see a complete gallery from a similar project. This will give you a better idea of their consistency and how they handle different aspects of the shoot, like lighting and candid moments.

3. What Is Your Photography Style?

Every photographer has a unique style. Some might be more traditional, while others focus on a documentary or candid approach. Discussing their style will help you understand if their vision aligns with yours. If you’re looking for something specific—like bright, airy images or dark and moody shots—this question is key.  Everyone has a different take on shooting a certain scene or has their own ideas.

4. What’s Included in Your Pricing?

Before signing any contracts, make sure you understand exactly what’s included in the photographer’s pricing. Does it cover the shoot itself, editing, and digital files? Are prints or albums included? You’ll want to be clear on the pricing and what you’re getting for your money.  You can always stop by our page and view our prices online, we’re not fond of smoke and mirrors and realize that your time is precious too.  I always encourage you to reach out and ask any questions you might have about a shoot and as always we love to work with new clients here in the McAllen, Mission, Edinburg Area.

5. Do You Have Backup Equipment?

ALL Professional photographers should always be prepared for the unexpected. Ask if they have backup cameras, lenses, and lighting equipment on hand. This ensures that the shoot will go on smoothly, even if technical issues arise.  On most shoots I have at least four cameras on me, two main ones and two back ups incase something were to go wrong.  Murphy’s law is no joke, and there are times you won’t get a second chance.  Always be prepared.

6. How Do You Handle Editing and Delivery?

Editing can make or break your final photos, so it’s essential to know what your photographer’s editing process looks like. Will they do basic retouching, color correction, and more? Also, ask how long it typically takes for you to receive your final images and in what format.

7. How do you do your lighting?

Lighting can dramatically affect the quality of your photos. Ask your photographer how they plan to manage the lighting for your shoot, especially if it’s outdoors or in a tricky indoor environment. A seasoned photographer should be able to adapt to different lighting conditions.

8. How Do You Handle Unexpected Changes?

Sometimes, things don’t go as planned—weather changes, venues fall through, or timelines shift. Asking your photographer how they handle these unexpected challenges will give you insight into their professionalism and flexibility under pressure.

9. Can You Share Client Testimonials or Reviews?

A photographer’s past clients can tell you a lot about their professionalism, work ethic, and reliability. Don’t hesitate to ask for reviews or testimonials to get a sense of their reputation. Websites like Google, Yelp, or social media can also be great places to check.

10. What Rights Do I Have to the Photos?

Finally, it’s important to clarify what rights you’ll have to the final images. Will you receive high-resolution files? Are you allowed to use the photos for personal or business purposes? Make sure you understand the terms around image ownership and usage.
