Capture Memories: A New Way to Think About Your Photography

With the weather finally shifting away from the intense heat, now’s the perfect time to grab your camera and head out with friends for a photoshoot. In the Rio Grande Valley, we joke about having only two seasons—summer 1.0 (full-on summer June – September) and summer 1.5 (summer lite October and November). But hey, we’ll take those less humid days and make the most of them! Let’s rethink how we approach photography to make these moments count.

1. Choose the Perfect Spot

Where you decide to shoot is key to setting the mood. Look for places that suit your theme, whether it’s a stylish coffee house, an open field, or even an urban / downtown setting with old-school architecture. Here in the RGV, we might not have traditional fall scenes, but you can still capture the unique vibe of your location. And remember, early mornings or late afternoons offer that softer, flattering light you’re after.

2. Why Shoot Alone? Bring Your Friends!

Photography is way more fun when you share the experience. Invite your friends along and make them part of the process! Not only will they add extra energy and personality to your shots, but they can also help you style yourself. Sometimes a second (or third) opinion is exactly what you need to choose the perfect outfit, accessories, and even location. Whether it’s coordinating looks or just giving you that confidence boost, your friends will help make the shoot more memorable and relaxed.

3. Get Creative with Posing

The key to a great shot is keeping things natural. Encourage your friends to laugh, move, and just have fun. The last thing you want are stiff poses! Use the location—whether it’s leaning against a wall, walking side-by-side, or relaxing on the grass—to inspire more candid moments. Let them be themselves, and the photos will reflect that authenticity.

4. Enhance the Scene with Props

Props can add an extra element of fun and make your photos more dynamic. Simple items like sunglasses, a cold drink, or a cool accessory can change the feel of your shoot. Since we’re in summer 1.5, think of lightweight and practical items that match the scene. It’s all about creating a story within the frame.

Embrace the Shifting Weather

Even though we don’t have those postcard-perfect fall days, the changing weather in the RGV brings its own unique charm. Take advantage of the milder temperatures and create an experience, not just photos, with your friends. You’ll capture memories that go beyond the camera.
